Fraunhofer Institute ICT, in the framework of the Remaghic project, successfully obtained results for the environmental and economic criterion for 6 REE Recycling Process routes.
Life Cycle Assessment studies have been performed, following the international standards of the ISO 14040:2006 and ISO14044:2006, included Life Cycle Inventory Analysis (LCI) and Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA), as well as their interpretation.
FhG and Cidaut employed the GaBi (Ganzheitliche Bilanzierung) thinkstep Software-System, a German LCA software tool, responsible to model every element of a product or system from a life cycle perspective.
The balance between the resources needed and the emissions to the environment was performed based on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). TOPSIS methodology (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) was then applied as decision making method to support the selection. The criteria were defined according to seven Key Performance Indicators (KPI): (1) TRL [1-9]; (2) Process efficiency [%]; (3) Waste generation [kg]; (4) Toxicity (CTUe)], (5) Global Warming Potential [CO2e]; (6) Material cost [€]; (7) Income [€].
